ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that appear inside ChatGPT conversations, matched to the topic a user is exploring. They are the first major form of AI advertising inside a large language model. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT on February 9, 2026, for logged-in adult users in the United States on the Free and ChatGPT Go tiers. Paid subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans do not see ads. According to Evertune analysis from June 2026, roughly 12% of ChatGPT responses now contain an ad.

Ads are visually separated from the answer and labeled "Sponsored" and do not alter the AI's response. OpenAI calls this answer independence: advertisers cannot pay to alter the organic response, only to place a sponsored unit near it.

How does the ChatGPT ad auction work?

ChatGPT ads run through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. Your bid sets your ceiling, but the auction weights ads by how relevant they are to the conversation, so a tightly matched ad on a smaller bid can beat a generic ad on a larger one. You pay just above the next-highest effective bid rather than your full bid.

Advertisers choose among three buying models:

CPC (cost per click): you pay per click. OpenAI recommends a starting maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click. Bids under $3 often fail to clear delivery.

CPM (cost per thousand impressions): used for reach and awareness. OpenAI's recommended maximum bid is $60 CPM, with observed rates dropping lower as inventory grows.

CPA / conversion-based (cost per action): a newer performance model billed against conversions, rolling out in early access in June 2026.

How does ChatGPT ad targeting work?

Context hints are the most distinctive part of ChatGPT ad targeting. A context hint is a plain-language description of the conversations, topics or situations where you want your ad to appear. ChatGPT uses context hints to map your ad to relevant user prompts.

First-party and third-party audience data targeting is not available on ChatGPT ads. There are no keyword match types, no audience lists and no demographic targeting in the traditional sense. Context hints carry the targeting.

Where are ChatGPT ads available?

ChatGPT ad geotargeting is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom, and OpenAI is adding regions regularly. In the United States, targeting goes down to state, DMA, city and zip code, though not every zip code is supported yet.

How to manage ChatGPT ads through Evertune

Evertune's Ads Manager, which powers a feature called Visibility Boost, lets you plan, build, launch and optimize ChatGPT ads inside one platform, built on your own AI visibility data.

Build from visibility data. Evertune's ads agent generates a full campaign hierarchy based on your visibility data: campaigns, ad groups, context hints written as persona-and-intent statements, and editable ad copy with UTM parameters already appended. It crawls your domain to match each ad group to its most relevant landing page.

Report in one place. Performance metrics from OpenAI sync into Evertune daily, so you have yesterday's data today. Evertune surfaces impressions, cost, clicks, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM, conversions, CVR, revenue and ROI in dashboards with trend charts, instead of the single metric the native interface shows at a time.

Stay in control. Edit, manage, and optimize campaigns directly from Evertune. The bidirectional sync means anything updated in Evertune gets updated in ChatGPT's ad manager and vice versa.

Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT ads

Who sees ChatGPT ads?

Logged-in adult users on the ChatGPT Free and Go tiers. Subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans do not see ads.

Do ChatGPT ads change the AI's answer?

No. Ads are labeled "Sponsored" and separated from the response. They never alter what ChatGPT says.

What is a context hint?

A context hint is a plain-language description of the conversations and intents where your ad should appear. ChatGPT uses context hints instead of keywords to match ads to prompts. Persona-and-intent hints outperform keyword-style hints.

Can I target by audience data?

No. First-party and third-party data targeting is not available. Context hints handle targeting.

What should I bid?

OpenAI recommends $3 to $5 per click for CPC campaigns and a $60 maximum for CPM campaigns. Bids under $3 CPC often fail to deliver.

Can I manage ChatGPT ads outside the native interface?

Yes. Evertune's Ads Manager connects to your OpenAI Ads account by API key and lets you build, launch, report on and optimize ChatGPT ads from one platform, with the targeting and structure derived from your AI visibility data.
