What does monitoring GEO progress mean?

Monitoring GEO optimization means tracking whether the content you're publishing and the technical improvements you're making to your site are actually changing how AI models perceive and recommend your brand.

Start with your AI Brand Score, week over week

The AI Brand Score is your topline indicator of AI visibility. It measures the probability that an AI model will recommend your brand unprompted in your category, weighted by where in the response your brand appears. The holy grail - a score of 100 - means your brand appeared first, every time.

When starting out in GEO, you should be checking your AI Brand Score weekly. For strong brands (over an AI Brand Score of 50), your score can naturally fluctuate a few points, but a sudden shift greater than 10 points indicates meaningful change. For emerging brands (under an AI Brand Score of 50), a sudden shift greater than 15 points indicates a meaningful change. Week-over-week tracking across models will tell you whether your efforts are moving the needle broadly or helping you win on a specific platform.

Track what you're publishing and where

Every piece of content you produce is a potential input into AI models' understanding of your brand. That includes owned content on your site, affiliate posts on third-party publishers and earned media coverage. Each category plays a different role.

Owned content is the fastest and generally easiest way for your brand to get picked up by AI search bots. New pages on your site can be visited by AI crawlers within days of publishing. Third-party placements, particularly on authoritative domains, carry more weight because AI models have been trained to trust multi-source corroboration. The same brand claim appearing across multiple credible sites is more persuasive to an LLM than the same claim appearing once on your own domain. So focus on breadth of mentions.

Use Bot Analytics to confirm your content is being seen

Before content can influence AI models, it has to be visited. Evertune's Bot Analytics tells you exactly which AI crawlers are visiting your site, which pages they're accessing and how often. Think of it as real-time visibility into whether AI models are even reading what you've written.

This is particularly useful in two scenarios. First, if you've published new content and want to know whether AI crawlers are picking it up, Bot Analytics will show you which User Agents have visited that URL and when. A ChatGPT-User visit shortly after publishing means real users are triggering AI queries that pull your page. That's a positive signal.

Second, if you've made site improvements based on Site Audit recommendations, Bot Analytics is how you confirm the changes worked. Site Audit tells you what to fix. Bot Analytics tells you whether fixing it resulted in more crawler activity. If bot traffic to your domain increases after you've addressed crawl accessibility issues, you have confirmation that your site is now easier for AI to read and index.

Watch whether your content gets picked up as a source

Evertune's Content Analytics report shows you which URLs AI models are actively retrieving when generating responses in your category. These are the pages being pulled via RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation), the mechanism AI models use when they don't have enough base knowledge to answer a question and need to search the web in real time.

The good news: new content can show up in Sources within days. A blog post published on a Monday can be cited by ChatGPT by Thursday. That's a fast feedback loop, and it means you can see relatively quickly whether the content you're publishing is landing as a usable source or getting ignored.

Understand the slower clock: foundational model training

Influencing an AI model's foundational knowledge - the inherent biases it carries from training data rather than live search - operates on a different timeline.

Most major AI models update their training data every three to six months. That means content published today may not be absorbed into a model's base knowledge until mid-year or later. This is why consistent publishing and multi-source presence matter: you're building a body of evidence that gets absorbed gradually, not a single piece that flips a switch.

The implication for monitoring is that your AI Brand Score may not fully reflect content-driven foundational improvements for months. Don't mistake a slow score change for an ineffective strategy. Track your inputs (volume and quality of content published, domains secured) alongside your outputs (AI Brand Score, Sources activity).
